Inte utan Audrey Hepburn

Det var många år sen jag såg filmen Breakfast at Tiffany's, men som många andra blev jag hejdlöst och hjälplöst förälskad i Audrey Hepburn. Filmen gav mig också en ny chans att ta till mig den ljuvliga Moon River som jag tidigare endast hört i skräniga, överpampiga versioner av diverse sångdivor - frrr!

Så trots alla dessa år, var det inte helt lätt att nu läsa boken utan att se Audreys ansikte framför mig, höra hennes röst, se filmens interiörer framför mig eller höra Moon River spelas upp i mitt huvud, om och om igen. Läsningen blev med andra ord mer en kontrastera/jämföra-upplevelse än ett eget självständigt läs (som det allt som oftast blir när man först sett filmen, och sen läser boken (eller tvärtom förstås). I boken är Holly Golightly till exempel blond. Hmpf! Och boken slutade utan någon egentlig katharsis där Holly fortsätter att vara samma självupptagna virvelvind, till skillnad från slutscenen i filmen där pojke får flicka och flicka får katt + pojke (i romantiskt, renande spöregn).

Boken och filmen är för mig två helt olika berättelser, med två helt olika syften. Bokens Holly Golightly är inte en person vars öde man gärna avundas; alldeles för ung, alldeles för undernärd och hennes relation till män är egentligen rätt störd. Berättarstrukturen är väldigt lik den Fitzgerald använder sig av i The Great Gatsby, dvs. en passiv berättare vars liv för en kort stund präglas av dramatiska händelser som styrs av andra än honom själv. Filmen är då mer ett klassiskt romantiskt Hollywood-drama, där berättaren i allra högsta grad blir både inblandad och sedan också en del av upplösningen.

Oavsett, läs boken! Se filmen! Båda är fantastiska!

Årets hittills sämsta läs...

... är inte så överraskande Paulo Coelhos Veronica Decides to Die. Jag tror banne mig att den är värre än Alkemisten. Hur den lyckades kvala in till listan äver 1001 böcker övergår mitt förstånd. Men om man får tro blurbarna på boken så finns det en hel del människor därute som tycker att Coelho är fullkomligt briljant. Och googlar man runt lite så jo, mycket riktigt, den här boken är tydligen allt från insiktsfull, litterärt genialisk, ögonöppnande, charmig och blaaaargh! Ack och ve, jag gråter, och Coelho, antar jag, skrattar hela vägen till banken.

Enligt mig är Veronica Decides to Die en bok fullproppad av idiotiska klyschor. Den ställer frågor kring det kollektiva normala, galenskap, liv, död och själens existens. Allt insvept i ett fluffigt sexistiskt moln som får en att känna att det faktiskt borde vara förbjudet för vissa män att skriva om kvinnor (ansedda författare som John Fowles och Ian McEwan kan läggas till denna lista).

Hoppas Capote gör ett bättre jobb. Nu är det dags för Breakfast at Tiffany's!

Påskläsning

Eftersom Grapes of Wrath både är tegelstensfet och ger en djup ångest så fort man öppnar den, tänkte jag att det kunde vara gutt att varva med lite kortare och lättsammare läsning. Jag kan ju dock inte påstå att jag ser fram emot att läsa Coelho (efter att ha tuggat på min egen arm i ren vrede efter Alkemisten) men men, nu har jag åtagit mig att läsa ALLA böckerna på listan... tack och lov är den kort. När jag letade efter omslagsbilder upptäckte jag dock att min superhjälte Buffy tydligen gör huvudrollen i filmatiseringen. Vet inte om detta är bra är dåligt. Bilderna från filmen får MIG att vilja lägga mig ner och dö. Se själv:

The Great Gatsby

Bok 699: The Great Gatsby (1925) av F. Scott Fitzgerald (USA).

Efter att ha läst en tredjedel av boken är jag sugen på jazz, fylla och fight. Och jag önskar att jag var snuskigt rik, ohederlig och svalt ytlig. Boken är ljuvlig!

Då var den utläst och gosh! Ett sånt härligt sönderslagande av det glada 20-talet! Ett tag ser berättelsen ut att bara vara ett klassiskt manligt triangeldrama där kvinnorna endast är spelpjäser för männens penismätningar (med pengar, whisky och jazz som dekor), men då sätter Fitzgerald igång en dramatisk kedjereaktion som skapar känslan av att hela det amerikanska samhället imploderar, fast uttryckt i ett par dysfunktionella och förljugna äktenskap.

Härlig läsning! Läs innan du dör. Om inte annat, den är kort och kan läsas ut på en eftermiddag.

Den här boken griper omedelbart tag i en, och än så länge förstår jag mycket väl varför den finns med på denna lista. Jag har nu kommit 50 sidor och är fast! Men ack, vreden är sannerligen allestädes närvarande! Man kan knappt läsa visa partier för att ilskan helt tar över. Fucking jävla bankväsende... (min gamla lärare i skapande svenska skulle för övrigt dödskallestämpla det här inlägget pga språklig inkonsekvens.)
